The entry of Donald Trump into the 2016 Republican Presidential Primary has thrown most everyone for a loop, voters, political analysts, and journalists alike. Cable news channels are flooded with wall-to-wall coverage of Trump’s every move and word as they see their ratings reach unprecedented levels.
Absent from the coverage and political analyses is a mention of a key reason for the campaign’s success. At first, Trump’s initial rise in the polls was chalked up to little more than name recognition of a successful businessman and reality television star. As time went by, political analysts and the media explained that Trump’s rise in popularity was due to his ability to speak to and relate to an “angry base” that feels betrayed by its GOP representatives and by Washington D.C. in general. Despite the recent flood of self-stroking, witty opinion pieces on Trump and his supporters, pundits have been unable to identify exactly what it is that keeps the Trump campaign alive. Were these qualities nothing more than a gifted ability to persuade, entertain, and portray a fighting attitude, Trump’s campaign would have been on its way out by now.
What is it, then, that keeps this guy afloat? Donald Trump has something that we as a nation have been starving for for quite some time. He possesses an outlook and confidence that we have not seen in President Obama or in any politician on Capitol Hill. Trump is bursting with the American spirit.
While several of the GOP candidates are no doubt excellent representatives of the American success story, Trump’s I can do it attitude is something many of us forgot existed. Americans appear so starved for this quality that they are willing to put many of their small government Constitutionalist principles at the wayside. Although I disagree with this choice, it is no surprise that a significant amount of Americans have flocked to this character in support. Not only does Trump possess the I can do it attitude, he is sure he can do it better. If that isn’t the American spirit, what is?
